Pastor’s Porch – “When an Eagle Came to Rest”

This week, something holy happened on the preschool playground at Magothy.

The children were outside—bundled in coats, laughing, playing, being their beautiful little selves—when someone looked up and whispered, “Look…” And there it was.

A bald eagle, not flying this time…but perched in a tree, right there on our church grounds.  Still. Watching. Resting.

The children grew quiet. Teachers paused.  For a moment, even time seemed to slow.  A national symbol of strength and freedom had chosen to rest right here—over our preschool, our church, our little corner of God’s world.

Scripture says,
“The Lord watches over you…the Lord is your shade at your right hand.” — Psalm 121:5

What a picture of that truth. The eagle wasn’t circling in a hurry. It wasn’t searching frantically. It simply sat… steady… grounded… at peace.

And I couldn’t help but think how often we forget that holy strength isn’t always loud or busy. Sometimes it looks like quiet confidence. Sometimes it looks like knowing where you belong. Sometimes it looks like being still long enough to let God hold you.

What a gift that these children didn’t just hear about God’s creation—they witnessed it. They learned that even the strongest of God’s creatures knows when to pause, to rest, to perch.

God may have placed that eagle there for the little ones to see, but I believe it was just as much a message for all of us.

A reminder that we don’t have to always be flapping, striving, or worrying. God invites us to sit, to breathe, to be held.

So today, if your heart feels tired…if your spirit feels heavy…if life has you running—Be like the eagle. Find a branch. Rest a while. Let God watch over you.  Because even the strongest wings need a place to land.

With wonder and gratitude,
